Emperor's Tale
2022
CMYK Serigraphy, print 1/16
12 x 18 inches
This piece is a digital collage design using old family pictures that my father gave to me. The final prints were created using the CMYK screen printing technique.
It portrays this family story that, since my great grandfather was in the first immigrant ship from Japan to Brazil (the ‘Kasato-Maru’), to celebrate 80 years of Japanese-Brazilian Immigration the Japanese emperor at the time, Hirohito, allegedly flew the immigrants who were still alive from Brazil to Japan to be part of a national ceremony. However, that's just a family story and there's no actual documentation or evidence that it happened, such as photos or some kind of award. That's why I decided to create a fictional photo of the event.
In the prints, you can see my great-grandfather on the left, his immigration documents, my grandfather and my father on the right, our family and the Japanese empire's symbols, and some other elements that hint at the story.
