Anan Katana
2021
Wood
4 x 52 x 4 inches
This wooden Katana sculpture represents a profound endeavor to craft an enduring family heirloom, intended to be cherished and passed down through generations.
My inspiration for this creation stems from the unique historical context of my Japanese family's immigration to Brazil, seeking refuge during the context of World War II. This migration experience has left our family devoid of the customary ancestral artifacts that are traditionally passed down through generations in Japan.
I meticulously carved our Japanese family name in Kanji onto the handle, alongside a traditionally recognized Japanese family symbol. These elements, steeped in cultural significance, serve to give the sculpture a palpable sense of heritage, forging a tangible connection to our roots and embodying the spirit of continuity that defines cherished family heirlooms.
