Anan Kamon
2021
Wood
22 x 24 x 13 inches
This sculpture depicts the "Kamon", the symbol of my Japanese family’s clan crest. The clan 'Anan', from the Ooita province.
This piece represents my process of researching and exploring my own cultural and racial identity to understand it. I also made the symbol out of Brazilian Tigerwood, to represent my mixed Brazilian-Japanese culture as a physical object.
Additionally, this sculpture is space-saving and portable. It can easily be dismantled and carried around. I experimented with that because a lot of my sculptures are larger scale, heavy, and a struggle to transport. So I wanted to try applying some intelligent design to one of my fine arts pieces.
I like how my dad’s family symbol is easily seen when the sculpture is unfolded even though the folding lines.
